In this discussion, Crystyl and Licia will each introduce their approaches to integrating non-ordinary states of consciousness, and then have a conversation about their intersecting work.
Crystyl will cover some of her foundational values in integration coaching, including:
Internal Family Systems is a powerful modality for psychedelic integration because it radically welcomes the difficult material that can arise in medicine journeys: parts of ourselves that we have buried because we may have seen them as too bad or too painful.
Radical compassion goes beyond accepting “bad” parts of ourselves and moves into welcoming our full histories and somatic sensations. We know that our most difficult behaviors or reactions could only have been formed by the most painful of experiences. We believe that if we had been given any choice, we would always have chosen love, connection and safety.
Levity and humor are important parts of my approach. It is a gift to bring laughter and childlike silliness to our work.
The more work you do before a medicine experience, the more you will benefit. At the same time, people should plan to have ample time to rest and “fall apart” after a journey.
As someone who developed hyper-vigilance, disorganized attachment, and profound unsafety in my nervous system, I feel particularly drawn to work with those who developed these coping mechanisms in response to childhood emotional neglect and generational burdens.
I never tell my clients they will be “happier” after starting this work. I tell them it’s going to be a rollercoaster, and that it is a years-long adventure, there is no quick “fix”. But I say with total confidence that clients will raise their self-awareness, their self-compassion and their compassion toward others. And that each additional hour they put into to self work will result not in parallel progress but in exponential progress.

Licia Sky is a co-founder of the Trauma Research Foundation with Dr Bessel van der Kolk.
She is a somatic educator, artist, singer-songwriter, and bodyworker who works with traumatized individuals and trains mental health professionals to explore parts work, mindful meditation, movement, theatre exercises, psychodrama, writing, psychedelic integration, and voice as tools for attunement, healing, and connection. For the past decade, she has been teaching expanded awareness in workshops to clinicians and lay people around the world. She is a regular teacher for the Esalen Institute, Cape Cod Institute, Mind Medicine Australia and the Ketamine Training Centre.
Crystyl Mo is an informed practitioner of somatic Internal Family Systems (IFS) to help clients radically welcome their emotions and experiences, and integrate non-ordinary states of consciousness. She incorporates trauma-informed modalities including IFS, Hakomi, Compassionate Inquiry, and somatic experiencing.
Crystyl assists Bessel Van der Kolk and Licia Sky in their trauma education workshops, and sees clients in the US, Europe and China. Previously a journalist covering food, art and travel for 20 years based in China, she is currently an Academy Chair for the global dining awards, The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. Due to her experience and dual hometowns of Shanghai and Cambridge, she often coaches clients with Asian-American backgrounds and those in the F&B and creative industries.
Crystyl believes that an important foundation of the therapeutic alliance is that clients feel safe and welcomed to share authentically, and that they know their practitioner is committed to their own inner work, a companion on the path toward freedom and awareness.
Crystyl tells people curious about healing through non-ordinary states that the medicine is the smallest, although very precious, key to progress. The real work is in the integration of the content that is accessed: putting the insights into practice in our daily lives and relationships.
