TOPIC: Existential Crisis – Improving the Odds of Surviving Cancer through the Mental Health ‘Code Cart’: The Promise of tVNS and Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies

Traditionally, cancer treatment has focused on what we do as physicians to eradicate cancer from the physical body utilizing a combination of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Although we have made major strides in cancer diagnosis and treatment, we have opportunities to improve the path to survivorship. Patients come into a cancer diagnosis with a lifetime of lived experiences, including those viewed as positive as well as adverse childhood experiences.  A cancer diagnosis initiates an existential spiritual crisis that provides a unique opportunity to focus on the psychosocial emotional wellbeing of the individual. Antidepressants fail miserably in oncology patients. Therefore, turning to novel electroceutical interventions, trauma therapy, plant medicines and psychedelic-assisted therapies provide a new path for us to shift gears in cancer care survivorship.
