General Manager (GM)

  • Reports to: Peter Hunt AM, Tania de Jong AM and the MMA Board
  • Direct Reports: Senior Leadership Team (covering Operations, Education and Training, Awareness and Advocacy, MMA Clinic, Fundraising and Finance)
  • Location: Melbourne Head Office, St Kilda Rd, Melbourne
  1. MMA is a mental health charity focused on translating psychedelic-assisted therapies (PAT) from the research environment into clinical practice, so that it is available through the medical system to all Australians that could benefit from these treatments. The reason for this focus is the terrible (and worsening) mental illness statistics that we have in Australia, the massive amount of individual suffering that this represents, the lack of effectiveness of current treatments for so many Australians and the strength of the research supporting the safety and efficacy of these PAT treatments.
  2. We leverage from an extraordinary Advisory Panel of leading clinicians and researchers from around the world with expertise in PAT and the treatment of mental illness more broadly. See the membership of the Advisory Panel here: https://mindmedicineaustralia.org.au/ambassadors/ and https://mindmedicineaustralia.org.au/advisory-board/. Everything we advocate for and implement in the clinical area is under the guidance of world-leading clinicians and researchers.
  3. For MMA, translating research into widespread clinical practice is all about overcoming system failure and promoting system improvement. In doing this, our achievements include:
Regulatory Change. Our successful advocacy led to the rescheduling in 2023 of the medical use of psilocybin and MDMA from prohibited substances to controlled medicines. In doing so, Australia became the first country in the world to achieve this milestone, and Australia now leads the world in the clinical rollout of these treatments. Our rescheduling applications were data rich.
Increasing Stakeholder Acceptance. Our advocacy has also led to wider acceptance of the validity of these treatments through widespread presentations, media coverage, individual contacts, significant partnerships and advocacy. As part of this initiative, we host a regular webinar series presented by leaders in the field from around the world – see https://mindmedicineaustralia.org.au/events/. In April 2026 we toured Dr Bessel van der Kolk – the world’s leading trauma expert and Author of the New York Times Number 1 bestseller ‘The Body Keeps The Score’. – for major venue presentations in capital cities across Australia – see https://collections.humanitix.com/dr-bessel-van-der-kolk-live
Training and Education. We have developed and run a world-leading clinician training course (our Certificate in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies course). CPAT has its own separate governance structure and is led by an extraordinary Faculty of global experts – see https://cpat.mindmedicineaustralia.org.au/. We are by far the largest trainer of clinicians in PAT in Australia.  To date we have trained nearly 600 clinicians with a further 170 being trained this year. Clinicians are also now coming to Australia from overseas because of the strong reputation of the course. We also run a shorter educational course for a wider audience called Fundamentals of Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy – see https://mindmedicineaustralia.org.au/fundamentals-online-course/
Medicine Supply. We are the largest supplier of medical grade GMP psilocybin and MDMA to medical clinics around Australia pursuant to our low-cost supply arrangements with a Canadian pharmaceutical company.
Consultancy Services. We provide consultancy services to psychiatrists to help them become Authorised Prescribers and to advise clinics on managing rollout logistics, governance, regulatory compliance and clinic economics.
Developing a Clinic as a Centre of Excellence. We have a 50% shareholding in the Mind Medicine Australia Clinic, which is situated in Abbotsford in inner city Melbourne and has 7 dosing rooms. We are running it as a Centre of Excellence in PAT so that it can lead the way in clinic development in Australia and link directly with our training activities – https://mindmedclinic.com.au/
New Payors. We are supporting the use of new payment pathways to enable patients to access these therapies (through medical insurers, the NDIS, the Department of Veteran Affairs, Workcover and the establishment of our own Patient Support Fund (see https://mindmedicineaustralia.org.au/psf/ ).
Supporting the capture of Real-World Evidence to Support our Advocacy. We have done this through the establishment of an independent and ethics approved registry at the Australian National University which is collating real world evidence, led by psychiatrist Professor Paul Fitzgerald. MMA is funding the registry.

Please find a more detailed summary of MMA’s achievements over the last seven years here: https://mindmedicineaustralia.org.au/seven-years-of-transforming-mental-health-in-australia/  A key aspect of MMA activities is its entrepreneurial approach to social change.

Rollout of PAT in Australia.

The clinical rollout of PAT therapies is now gathering momentum. During the 6 months to 31 December 2025 the number of Authorised Prescriber psychiatrists increased by 132% (from 38 to 88) with patient numbers increasing by 40% (from 134 to 188). Whilst the numbers are still small relative to the number of sufferers, we are starting to see the acceleration in the use of these treatments that we always anticipated. Consistent with the clinical trial results, there have been no significant adverse events, and the outcomes have been excellent.

Financial Position of MMA

MMA is in a strong financial position with income streams from its various activities covering its operational costs.  This means that donations can be used to fund special projects like the Patient Support Fund and the development of the MMA Clinic as a Centre of Excellence.

General Manager

The General Manager (GM) is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and efficient operational management of MMA, ensuring the effective delivery of its strategic objectives. The role oversees organisational operations, finances, governance, people, and stakeholder engagement, while supporting the Board and Executive Director to advance the organisation’s mission of expanding safe, evidence-based psychedelic-assisted therapies in Australia.

The GM will play a critical role in representing MMA, leading and optimising the existing team, building a productive, high-performance culture and ensuring alignment across all functions. This role balances strategic leadership, operational excellence, and people management within a complex and highly regulated environment.

We have a purpose-driven and dedicated team with allocated responsibilities across all the areas described above.   However, given the significant growth of MMA there is a need to focus on improving the efficiency and productivity across the organisation to achieve its strategic vision. This role requires a highly collaborative, values-driven leader who is comfortable operating within an entrepreneurial and “big vision” charity in a fast-evolving, evidence-based and sometimes sensitive sector. The GM must balance innovation with discipline, and compassion with accountability.

This role is structured as a high-impact, 3-day-a-week commitment (0.6 FTE) designed for a seasoned executive who prioritises outcome over presence. While we have modelled this as a three-day schedule, we are flexible for the right candidate’s ideal workflow.
