TOPIC: Understanding Ibogaine: The Science, The Safety, and The Experience

Among psychedelic medicines, ibogaine stands apart. Former Navy SEAL Ben Ahn offers an accessible introduction to what makes it so unusual: what the ibogaine experience involves, and why it appears to reach addiction and deep-seated trauma in ways other psychedelics do not. He also addresses the other side of that potency. Ibogaine demands rigorous medical screening and monitoring, and understanding why is central to understanding the medicine itself. Speaking strictly as an operator and advocate rather than a medical clinician, Ben draws on his work founding an ibogaine retreat centre to offer a grounded, balanced account of both the promise of ibogaine and the responsibilities it carries.

Objectives:

  • Understand the phases of the ibogaine experience and what distinguishes it from classical psychedelics.
  • Explore why ibogaine’s unique pharmacological profile allows it to address addiction and entrenched trauma where single-target compounds may not.
  • Cover how ibogaine is thought to support the brain’s recovery from the effects of dependence and trauma.
  • Outline the medical risks associated with ibogaine and why thorough screening, monitoring, and qualified supervision are essential.
  • Discover the extended recovery and integration window that follows an ibogaine session, and what it means for lasting change.

Ben Ahn

Ibogaine Retreat Founder & Bwiti Initiate

Ben Ahn is the founder of Nomena, an ibogaine retreat in Southeast Asia, and an advocate for the responsible, medically supervised use of ibogaine. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Ben served as a Navy SEAL, deploying to Iraq with SEAL Team 3, before transitioning to a corporate career that spanned more than fifteen years with Fortune 500 industrial companies. In his final role, he led international sales and business development across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, India, and Africa as a Division Vice President.

Ben now supports people from many walks of life through their own journeys of deep emotional release, reconnection with their authentic self, and profound shifts in awareness. He is certified in psychedelic-assisted therapy and was formally initiated into the Bwiti Missoko Miobé lineage by a Nima na Kombo (high priest) of the Babongo, the indigenous Gabonese forest people credited as the originators of Bwiti and iboga use.
